Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre was arrested on Wednesday (July 8, 2026) for allegedly assaulting docs and medical workers at a civic-run hospital in Thane district of Maharashtra, police stated.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Kalyan, Atul Zende, stated Mhatre has been taken into custody in reference to the felony offence registered in opposition to him and his aides at Vishnunagar police station.
Additional investigation is underway, he added.
The incident on the civic-run hospital in Kalyan on Monday (July 6, 2026) night sparked widespread outrage after a video went viral. Mhatre and his aides allegedly assaulted two docs and different workers after a household was suggested to shift a new child to a different facility.
A case was registered in opposition to Mhatre and 5 others on Tuesday (July 7, 2026) night time, following public outrage and stress from the Indian Medical Affiliation (IMA), which threatened to close clinics and hospitals within the space if fast motion was not taken.
In the meantime, Thane Lok Sabha MP Naresh Mhaske issued a press release from Delhi, distancing the social gathering from the corporator’s actions and confirming that inner disciplinary proceedings have been initiated.
